Sunday School
The Mother of Perpetual Help Syro Malabar Mission Sunday Catechism began its journey in 2008 with just four classes and around 40 students. From these humble beginnings, it has grown into a vibrant and flourishing faith formation community.
Over time, the program experienced steady growth in both size and structure. By its second year, the number of students had doubled, additional teachers joined, and annual examinations with awards were introduced. A significant milestone was the decision to hold classes before the Holy Qurbana, which allowed for extended teaching time and reduced cancellations due to other events.
As the mission moved to a new parish location, the Catechism program evolved further. Sacraments such as First Holy Communion and Confirmation began to be celebrated regularly. The implementation of structured assessments, attendance rewards, and the adoption of official Syro Malabar Church textbooks greatly enhanced the quality of instruction.
Over the years, guided by the grace of God and the dedicated leadership of various Redemptorist priests who have shepherded the mission since its inception, as well as the committed service of lay teachers, the program has continually been revitalized with fresh energy and new initiatives. Enriching activities such as Bible quizzes, faith-based camps, and studies about saints, psalms, and Scripture were introduced. Students were encouraged to take active roles in the liturgy, including leading the monthly Holy Qurbana, participating in the rosary during October, and joining major diocesan celebrations. The Redemptorist priests continue to provide leadership to this day.
The Sunday Catechism program runs in two sessions, each offering a complete set of classes from Year 1 to Year 12. This structure ensures a seamless and comprehensive journey of faith formation for all students. With the support of a committed team of teachers, the program lays a strong foundation in faith and values. Students who complete Year 12 with consistent attendance and strong academic performance are awarded a diploma in recognition of their dedication and achievement.
Looking ahead, the mission remains committed to nurturing faith, values, and a deep spiritual foundation in the next generation.
